Aww, now I’m all weepy. There was always something so poignant about the song that just always stuck with me. I taught it to my daughter when she was 4. Now she is 8. And she and I both think it’s cool that this blog post still gets hits 5 years after it’s posting and even cooler that YOU the artist responded to the blog post. We will definitely be looking for that re-recording. I will make sure to link it hereif I can, and on the Facebook page and get my husband to play it on his music podcast….The Jersey Jamcast. Thanks David, so much, for making such a great song and a great memory.

OMG I am so blessed to have my work reach and affect so many people. Thank you all for posting your fond memories of that little Rain Song. I was camping with a friend and our tent was on a little hill. It started to rain and the tent filled up with water. We saw a house and knocked on the door and a young woman opened the door and to our surprise, she went to college with my girlfriend. They invited us in, fed us, drank wine, and had a great weekend with them. It never stopped raining. There was an old acoustic guitar there and I sat by the window on Saturday morning and wrote the song. I received hundreds of letters from 3rd graders around the country and answered (I hope) all of them thanking them for writing me and telling me they loved my song. I still have the sweet, little, 3rd grade pictures and notes. I will record it again and post it as a free download on my website: davidmchugh.com Happy Holidays to all! David

I went to Charleston Elementary having heard this song for several grades. All the classes love it because it was a good song and it was funny(especially when he got mad it himself). I have been trying to remember the name of the artist or find info via the snippets of the song I remember. I have been unsuccessful so far.
I would love to get this song to share with my 9 yo son and my 9 month old daughter.
It’s got to be somewhere.
I’m surprised a former teacher out there hasn’t mentioned the name yet.
So a little help to point us in the right direction would be appreciated.

Yep, ditto everything said here. Sing it every rainy day. Have been singing it ALOT recently LOL. Learned it in second grade music 1982 Glenwood Elementary Rossfird, OH. I too remember the author discussing it as he was writing it. So funny we all had the same experience with it and continue to sing it still!

I am 45 yo and I remember learning this song in grade school. It made an lasting impression on me as well. I’ll still hum it while I work at a bank as an adult. Love this song & would really like to know who wrote / performed it.

Wow… I’m 41 years old, and every so often I get this song stuck in my head. I vividly remember singing this song in 3rd grade at Mineral Elementary School (Virginia). Nice to know I’m not the only one with fond memories of this song!!

I was searching these lyrics as the rest of you. then I
found this and also my elem school music teacher. I have asked her about the song and will post if I find out the name and or author of the song. I am 40 years old and sang this in 3rd grade at Andrew Jackson elem in Paducah KY..also do u guys remember a song going ..”kids are music everybody knows that kids are music…”?

Oh my goodness! I love this song and have been singing it since childhood. I too, thought it was James Taylor or John Denver…but it totally WAS from 3rd grade music class. I am sooo glad you posted this…I was googling the lyrics AGAIN…how cool that we are all impacted by this song from childhood. I feel very connected to all of you, even though we learned it in different classes across the country. So weird!!!
