I’ve been reading through the collected “Y- The Last Man” comic books the past few weeks – there’s nine volumes and I got them from the library. It’s the story of what might happen if all the males of the world were wiped out in one fell swoop – minus one guy who is the last man on earth. It’s a really amazing series, and I can’t wait to get to the end to see what happens. What is really amazing to me is the amount of stories and the ground that is covered in the series. They travel the world, seeking answers for why the plague happened, and they explore the intricacies of a post-male world. Just incredible stuff, and for nine – soon to be ten collections – that’s 60 issues of the comic it goes on. They delve into a variety of subplots, and ancillary characters come and go.
So I’m totally and completely puzzled why they want to make it into a three movie series, which would amount to a mere six hours of storytelling – when it would actually be much better suited to being a nice 5 season TV series. A comic book like this is literally a pretty darn good storyboard for a nice long series. I’m not talking about a network show either – perhaps something along the lines of an HBO series – so they could use the full extent of language and sexual content. Maybe 5 seasons of ten episodes apiece – that would so the comic justice. But three movies? We’re going to lose a LOT of storytelling and depth. Moreover -it’s the kind of thing that can build a large and loyal fanbase over a period of months and years, rather than smack people in the face once every two years for six years (which is about what I figure for production time and release time). “Y” is just the perfect series to be brought to TV as well – and action adventure with a variety of settings, a lot of characters – it just makes so much sense on so many levels.
This is not the only series I’ve given this thought to either. While Harry Potter was certainly of movie blockbuster status as a phenomenon – the movies are pretty much disappointing for anyone who has read any of the books. The compromises made to fit in the key points of the mythos are sometimes extreme. Wouldn’t it have been much greater fun to have a TV series – where all the intricacies of Hogwarts could have been explored? I know, I know…there’s budget issues…but I’d gladly have taken a somewhat lower budget Harry for better storytelling. I wouldn’t be keen on turning it into “Hogwarts 90210″ – but at least we could have had some more Quidditch. I guess though once the Hollywood studios get a hold of something – they will milk it for all its’ worth, as seen by how much money they can make from it for that particular year, rather than do the actual artistic works real justice.
I’m sure there are other book series this could apply to in other genres I’m not as familiar with. I’ve not seen the Bourne series – but did those stand up to the books? How about some romance novels? Does anyone else feel that movies give book series the short shrift, and that a TV series would be able to fulfill a lot more?
